Designers have fallen hard for large-format porcelain — and as one of the few Tampa Bay showrooms displaying full slabs in person, we get asked about them every day. Here’s why they’ve taken over, and how to use them in your own project.
What exactly is a porcelain slab?
Imagine porcelain tile — the dense, non-porous, fired-at-extreme-heat material — produced in enormous sheets, commonly around 5 feet by 10 feet and often just 6 to 12 millimeters thin. That combination of huge format and slim profile is what makes slabs so versatile: big enough to cover an entire wall without a seam, light enough to install in places natural stone can’t go.
Why designers love them
Almost no grout lines. One slab replaces dozens of tiles. Showers, feature walls and floors read as a single continuous surface — the seamless look that defines modern design, with far fewer joints to clean.
Bookmatching. Slabs with dramatic veining can be mirrored side by side so the pattern flows like a butterflied piece of natural marble. It’s the centerpiece move in luxury bathrooms right now, at a fraction of the cost of book-matched stone.
One material, whole-room consistency. Because slabs are thin and workable, the same design can run from countertop to backsplash to waterfall island edge — even up a shower wall. Matching everything from one line is something only porcelain really allows.

Where to use porcelain slabs

What to know before you buy
Two things separate a stunning slab project from a headache. First, the slab itself: look for high-definition, full-vein patterns — the quality difference between slab lines is real, and it’s exactly why we hand-pick ours at the source. Second, the fabricator and installer: cutting and handling large thin slabs is a specialty. Buy from people who know the material and can connect you with installers who work with it regularly — that’s part of what we do.
Slabs vs. large-format tile
